* Web Journalist Desmond Chathuranga De Alwis arrested

Aug 31, Colombo: Web Journalist Desmond Chathuranga De Alwis was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Monday (31) evening at his residence in Piliyandala, a suburb of Colombo.

CID sources say that Chathuranga de Alwis was arrested following a special investigation into the complaints received by the CID. It is reported that he is being questioned at the CID headquarters.

It was reported, the web journalist was charged for allegedly publishing reports which are in contempt of court and the judicial process.

A laptop and mobile phones used by the journalist have also been taken into custody by the CID.

Chathuranga Alwis was also the news manager of the Independent Television Network (ITN) for a brief period during the good governance government. During that time, he has also been accused of publishing malicious and untrue news on his personal websites targeting political and personal figures, the ITN reported.

Chathuranga Alwis is also a strong activist in the media unit of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
