Oct 30, Colombo: According to the President’s Vision for Prosperity policy, the Ministry of Irrigation has implemented the Irrigation Prosperity (Wari Saubhagya) program with the aim of expanding and accelerating the national food production process.
Under this program, 8 tanks and 2 main anicuts will be rehabilitated by the Sri Lanka Army at a cost of Rs. 39 million to improve agricultural production covering the entire "L" zone.
The massive project commenced in the Mahaweli L Zone centered on Kiriibban Wewa, Ethawetunu Wewa and Vehera Tenna divisions.
The development of Sahan Wewa and Hansavila Wewa commenced under the leadership of Minister of Irrigation Chamal Rajapaksa Thursday under the direction of the Army and with the participation of the farming community.
This will enable 150 acres of paddy fields to be cultivated in both Yala and Maha seasons and about 200 farming families and fishing families will have a permanent livelihood.
Minister SM Chandrasena, State Ministers Siripala Gamlath and Anuradha Jayaratne, Member of Parliament Cader Mastan participated in the occasion.
