* Eight including a police sergeant arrested over the death of youth while in custody

Oct 18, Colombo: Eight suspects, including a police sergeant and seven outsiders have been arrested in connection with the recent death of a young man while in the custody of the Pugoda police.

The 21-year-old youth, a resident of Polgaslanda was arrested on the 11th on a drug charge. He was admitted to the Pugoda Regional Hospital on the same day after suddenly falling ill while in police custody and later transferred to the Ragama Hospital where he had died.

His wife had complained to the police that her husband had been assaulted by a group on the night of his arrest.

According to the Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana an investigation was launched under a Senior Superintendent of Police on the orders of the Acting Inspector General of Police.

Further investigations are being carried out on the instructions of the Acting IGP.
