* PM considers granting voting rights to Sri Lankans living abroad

Oct 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has disclosed that a select committee will be proposed to amend the election laws, including granting voting rights to Sri Lankans living abroad.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has considered this at a discussion held with Elections Commission officials at Temple Trees Friday to discuss the strategic plans of the Elections Commission.

Expressing his views, the Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has stated that it is imperative that the election laws be amended in accordance with the 'Strategic Plan of the Election Commission 2020-2024'.

Officials of the Election Commission briefed the Prime Minister on several changes need to be done on the election system including revision of election deposits, granting an earlier date for those who are unable to vote on the day of the election, updating the electoral roll every three months to give the youth the right to vote as soon as they turn 18, granting voting rights to expatriate Sri Lankans, controlling election expenses, establishment of 'Super Voting Centers' to facilitate the disabled and e-voting system under special projects.

Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam, Additional Secretaries to the Prime Minister Chaminda Kularatne, Ganesh Dharmawardena, Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake, Secretary to the Commission HMTD Herath, Deputy Commissioner of Elections S. Achchudan, Research and Planning Director Channa P. de Silva, Administrative Secretary of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and Chairman of the National Housing Development Authority, Renuka Perera were also present at the discussion
