* Sri Lanka’s first ever virtual cabinet meeting held today

Nov 30, Colombo: For the first time in history, Sri Lanka held a virtual cabinet meeting today using video technology.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa chaired the meeting from the Presidential Secretariat while the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and other ministers of the cabinet joined the meeting from their respective ministries. The meeting was a success, President’s Office said.

The video cabinet meeting was organized taking into account not only the COVID epidemic but also the efficiency, convenience, time and cost savings.

The President has given priority to introducing, using and practicing new technology. It is also emphasized in the “Vision of Prosperity” policy statement.

With that purpose in mind, the recently established Ministry of Technology was taken under the purview of the President, the President’s Office said.

The government hopes to integrate investment in the education sector with the economic sector to build a society armed with new technology in the 21st century. It is the intention of the President to build a culture of technological innovation that will enhance the quality of life of the people.

Simplification of government machinery and market processes, and the expansion of digital governance through the use of information technology as a tool for knowledge exchange are a priority of the new Ministry.
