* COVID-19 cases in Sri Lankan prisons rise to 617

Nov 21, Colombo: The total number of COVID-19 cases reported from Sri Lankan prisons has risen to 617 after another 63 cases were detected, the Prisons Department said on Saturday (Nov. 21).

Prisons Commissioner Chandana Ekanayake said of the 617 cases recorded, 578 were inmates and 39 were Prison officials.

The highest number of 236 cases were detected at the Welikada Prison.

Meanwhile, 11 inmates of the Boossa Prison have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, said Dr. Venura K. Singarachchi, the regional epidemiologist of the Galle District. The 11 detainees have been transferred to the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center.

It has been decided to use indigenous medicine to control the spreading of coronavirus in prisons. Accordingly, measures will be taken to cultivate the needed raw materials for medicines in the vicinity of prisons, State Minister of Prison Reforms and Prisoners Rehabilitation Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle has said, according to Neth News.
