Sat, Nov 21, 2020, 11:15 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 21, Colombo: Former Director of the State Intelligence Service (SIS) Nilantha Jayawardena had telephoned former President Maithripala Sirisena on three occasions about an hour before the Easter Sunday attack, it was revealed before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry investigating the Easter Sunday attacks on Thursday (19).

It was revealed that the former President had been contacted by telephone through his Chief Security Officer while he was in Singapore at 7.57 am, 7.59 am and 08.01 am before the first attack on 21 April 2019.

This was revealed during a testimony given before the Commission on Thursday by an Air Force officer who was on duty at 8.00 am at the telephone exchange at the former President's Paget Road residence.

The telephone records has shown that the duration of the call at 7.59 am is 157 seconds and at 8.01 am is 93 seconds. The officer testified that even after the attack, Nilantha Jayawardena had received calls including a 687 second call at 1.10 pm.

The Air Force official, who testified before the Commission, said the former President Maithripala Sirisena left for India on April 16 last year, a few days before the Easter attack, and then left for Singapore for treatment. He said the former President and the former Director of State Intelligence often connected through the telephone.

“I do not know if the former President is using a personal phone. One of the former President's two main bodyguards accompanies him on every trip abroad. Maithripala Sirisena was contacted through his chief bodyguard,” the officer told the Commission.

“On that day Mr. Nilantha Jayawardena connected with the President through the telephone exchange before the Easter attack. In most cases this is the case. The former President also asks to connect him. Therefore, I remember their phone calls very well,” the Air Force official testifying before the Commission said.
