Fri, Nov 20, 2020, 11:00 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 20, Colombo: Prime Minister and Minister of Urban Development and Housing Mahinda Rajapaksa Friday opened the new Manning Market in Peliyagoda.

The Prime Minister unveiled the plaque and opened the completely revamped wholesale vegetable market that was shifted from Pettah in Central Colombo to Peliyagoda.

Construction work on the new Manning Market, which has a number of facilities, was expedited on the instructions of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The four-storey Peliyagoda Manning Market has been set up to transport lorries carrying vegetables to every shop up to the 3rd floor.

The refurbished market will not only provide an environment for vendors and consumers with all amenities but also provide parking facilities for 600 vehicles which will resolve the traffic congestion in the area.

The Manning Market, which was limited to 2 acres in Pettah, has been converted into a fully-fledged wholesale mall spread over 13.5 acres. The total cost of this project is 6.5 billion rupees.

Speaking at the occasion, the Prime Minister said In the process of resolving the heavy traffic congestion in the city of Colombo, the focus was on the Colombo Fish Market and the Colombo Manning Market. “At that time we realized that taking these to Peliyagoda would be the best solution,” he said.

“We will move not only the wholesale trade of fish and vegetables, but also the wholesale supply of dry food and building materials in Pettah to Peliyagoda in the future, for the comfort of the people.”

With the Peliyagoda Exchange connecting highways to all parts of the country, farmers will be able to easily bring their bulk products to Colombo. It will also facilitate transportation to areas outside Colombo, the Premier noted.

“The Peliyagoda interchange is connected to all the expressways including Airport Expressway, Port Expressway, Southern Expressway, Central Expressway and Northern Expressway. As such, it is an ideal hub for easy freight transport throughout the country.”

In line with President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa's "Vision for Prosperity" policy statement, the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa stated in the budget presented to Parliament that a number of other major development projects would be launched soon.
