* President inaugurates National Tree Planting Program

Nov 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa Friday inaugurated the ‘Husma Dena Thuru’ (Trees that give breath) National Tree Planting Program to plant two million saplings.

The new afforestation project planned by the Ministry of Environment expects to plant 2 million saplings across the country and increase the country’s forest-cover by 30 percent as set out in the President’s Vistas of Prosperity policy statement.

Trees are planted to suit the area, with the aim of reducing the percentage of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and increasing the volume of oxygen.

The Ministry of Environment plans to plant 02 million saplings within the next five years.

The program is jointly implemented by the Central Environmental Authority, the Ministry of Environment, the Defense Headquarters and the Sri Lanka Army.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning planted a white sandalwood sapling near the entrance to the Defense Headquarters in front of the Central Environmental Authority in Battaramulla as the first sapling.

Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera and Chief of Army Staff and Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva also joined the program.

The President symbolically gave away a stock of saplings to a representative group of school students whose schools are at the forefront of the green environment project.

Secretary to the Ministry of Environment, Dr Anil Jasinghe, Chairman of Central Environment Authority, iripala Amarasinghe, Director General of Central Environment Authority, Hemantha Jayasinghe, Senior Military officers including Major General Indrajith Kandanaarchchi, Director General Agriculture and Livestock, students, teachers and invitees attended the occasion strictly adhering to health guidelines.
