Nov 17, Colombo: The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal for the implementation of a Unitary Digital Identity framework and the e-National Identity Card project under it.
The Government is following a unitary digital identity framework and a strategy for realizing the objective of “A Skillful Nation” which is one of the ten fundamental objectives of the national policy framework of ‘Vistas of Prosperity and
Splendor’, a statement on the cabinet decisions said.
Accordingly, the unitary digital identity framework has been given priority as a national level program.
Implementation of the project of electronic national identity cards has been recognized as one component under the unitary digital identification framework prepared jointly by Sri Lanka Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and the Department of Registration of Persons.
The Cabinet of Ministers have approved the 06-point proposal tabled by the President for the implementation of the following.
Granting approval for the unitary digital identification framework for Sri Lanka that has been finalized by the Committee entrusted with the planning of the relevant programs.
Appointment of a Presidential Task Force for assisting with the guidance required for the establishment of the unitary digital identification framework for Sri Lanka.
Entrusting the responsibility of the implementation of the unitary digital identification framework project for Sri Lanka to Sri Lanka Information and Communication Technology Agency.
Implementation of e-national identity card project in collaboration with Sri Lanka Information and Communication Technology Agency and Department of Registration of Persons.
Applying required amendments to the Registration of Persons Act No. 32 of 1968 for the convenience of the implementation of the unitary digital identification framework and the e - national identity card project for Sri Lanka.
To finalize the project by 31.12.2022.
