June 29, Colombo: The Special Task Force (STF) of Police Monday arrested two suspects with 12 firearms hidden in a shop in Pitipana, Homagama. The stock of firearms owned by an underworld gang is considered to be the largest ever seized by the police.

The STF found the firearms according to information received by questioning a 38-year-old man from Karuwalagaspitiya, Meegoda.

It has been revealed that the suspect had brought the stock of firearms to the shop in Pitipana from another place about a month ago.

Accordingly, the STF searched the shop in the Pitipana Moragahahena area in Homagama this morning and seized the firearms stock hidden in the shop.

The suspect arrested has been identified as ‘Potta Kapila”. The owner of the shop has also been arrested by the police.

Potta Kapila is accused of robbing a jewellery shop in Matara and killing a police officer. He has been in remand and now out on bail.

Among the weapons recovered were eleven T-56 assault rifles and one T-81 rifle.

DIG Varuna Jayasundara, Commanding Officer of the Police Special Task Force (STF) had also arrived to inspect the firearms.

Police Special Task Force suspects that major crimes including robbery, drug trafficking and contract killing have been committed using the firearms and further investigations are underway to identify the crimes.

It is reported that investigations have been handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department.
