* Five arrested for providing contraband to inmates of Welikada and Magazine prisons

June 28, Colombo: The police have arrested five residents near the Welikada and Magazine prisons in Colombo for allegedly providing drugs, mobile phones and other equipment to the inmates.

The police media unit stated that the suspects were arrested during operations conducted by the Borella police.

Special team of Borella police has conducted a raid on residences near the Magazine Prison and recovered several parcels prepared to be thrown over the prison wall.

Investigations have revealed that the suspects had tried to deliver banned items including mobile phones, phone chargers, batteries and drugs including heroin and ICE as well as tobacco to the inmates.

The suspects are to be produced in court.

It has been recently reported that a suspicious parcel appeared to be a bomb was thrown over the prison wall into the premises. Upon inspection by the Bomb Disposal Squad, the parcel was found to contain stocks of heroin and ICE, a mobile phone and a charger that were well concealed.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said that the prisons intelligence units have been permitted to inspect all prisons. Accordingly, raids are being carried out on a daily basis, he said.
