* Former Deputy Minister Premalal Jayasekara sentenced to death over murder of election supporter in 2015

July 31, Colombo: Ratnapura High Court has sentenced to death three persons, including Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Ratnapura District candidate and former Deputy Minister Premalal Jayasekara alias Choka Malli over the death of an election supporter in 2015.

Former Deputy Minister of the previous UPFA government Premalal Jayasekara, Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councilor Aruna Nilantha, Kahawatta Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Vajira Darshana were charged with the murder of an election supporter of the common candidate Maithripala Sirisena during the presidential elections in 2015.

The suspects have been charged in the Ratnapura Provincial High Court on nine counts including murder of Shantha Dodangoda and attempted murder of two others in the shooting while the victims were decorating the venue for an election rally in Kahawatta on January 05, 2015.

The verdict on the trial was announced by the Ratnapura High Court today (31).
