July 18, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa states that he will give priority to the growth of local rubber production by giving a fair price for rubber and the move will enable to attract the unemployed to the industry.
President Rajapaksa made this observation while touring the Kegalle district today (18) in support of the candidates of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) contesting the forthcoming General Election.
The campaigning President engaged in a cordial conversation with the people at the Deraniyagala Sirisaman Central College Grounds and near the Deraniyagala Town Children's Park.
Those in the rubber industry do not get a fair price because of middlemen. Therefore, the number of people engaged in the industry has decreased, the people told the President. Residents also presented the problems of those engaged in the production of spices including pepper to the President.
The President also participated in a public meeting at Dehiowita Junction, Ruwanwella organized by Candidate YG Padmasiri and a meeting organized by candidate Sudath Manjula at the fair ground in front of the Ruwanwella Public Stadium.
The President received a warm welcome from the audience. People praised the new political culture introduced by President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and praised the election campaign for not using posters and polluting the environment.
The people also briefed the President on the development of by-roads including the Moraliyagagabada road and the drinking water problem.
The President instructed former Minister of State Kanaka Herath to expedite the development of rural roads in the district under the 100,000 km road development project.
The President’s attention was also drawn to the problems of graduates in the district and the demands of graduate Samurdhi Development Officers. The people also discussed with the President the re-cultivation of barren lands belonging to the Janatha Estate Development Board.
Former Minister of State Kanaka Herath and candidate Ajith Shaminda participated in the President’s campaign tour in Kegalle District today.
