* Police constable drowns trying to retrieve phone fallen into river

July 02, Colombo: Thihagoda Police say that a constable, who had attempted to retrieve his mobile phone that had fallen into a tributary of the Nilwala River, has gone missing in the river.

The missing 54 year old Police constable Athula Kandambi (58894) attached to Slave Island Police was a resident of Bandattara, Thihagoda, in Matara.

His mobile phone had fallen into a tributary of the Nilwala River near the Thihagoda Magalgoda Drainage Plant around 10 pm last night. While attempting to retrieve the phone He had fallen into the river and disappeared.

The body has not been recovered yet and the police suspect the body may have been taken by a crocodile in the river.

Thihagoda Police are conducting further investigations.
