Tue, Dec 1, 2020, 11:14 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 01, Colombo: According to the Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana, 109 persons have been hospitalized so far following the deadly Mahara Prison riot. Among the injured are two prison officers and others are inmates.

The Police Spokesman speaking to ‘Derana Aruna’ live program this morning (01) said the injured are currently receiving treatment at the ward designated for COVID-19 at the Colombo North Teaching Hospital at Ragama.

DIG Rohana said as of this morning eight inmates have been killed in the unrest. However state-run daily Dinamina reported that an injured inmate has died this morning raising the total number of dead to nine.

According to the Police Spokesman, some of the inmates were injured from clashes among different groups of prisoners. He said most of them were hospitalized with minor injuries.

The unrest broke out Sunday (29) afternoon when a group of inmates at the Mahara Prison tried to escape from the prison after another group of inmates were found to be infected with COVID-19 coronavirus.

Eight prisoners were killed in the riot after prison officials opened fire to prevent the unruly prisoners from attempting to break free from the prison.

The Defense Secretary Maj. Gen. (Retd) Kamal Gunaratne has instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), C.D. Wickramaratne to probe into the tense situation escalated at the Mahara Prison and the Justice Minister has appointed a five-member committee to investigate the incident and report to him.
