Aug 09, Colombo: Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), the new breakaway party of the United National Party (UNP) extended an invitation to the defeated UNP members to join the party led by former deputy leader of UNP Sajith Premadasa to embark on a new journey.

Harshana Rajakaruna, SJB MP elected from Gampaha District urges the UNP members to learn lessons from the massive defeat suffered by the UNP at the 2020 parliamentary election held last week and unite around the Samagi Jana Balawegaya under the leadership of Premadasa.

He told the media that a new journey could be embarked on under the leadership of Sajith Premadasa.

“The people in our country has given a good message to the United National Party led by Ranil Wickremesinghe to give the leadership of the UNP to Sajith Premadasa. We need to unite to embark on a new journey. Therefore, we urge all the members to join us unconditionally. Sajith Premadasa is the leader of us and yours now,” he said.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya contesting for the first time at a parliamentary election won’t 47 electoral seats and 7 National List seats in the 9th parliament while the grand old party UNP failed to secure a single seat including that of party leader and former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. However, based on the votes received the UNP has secured one National List slot.
