* Election Chief expects first result of election tomorrow afternoon

Aug 05, Colombo: The Election Commission says that the number of voters who cast their ballots in the general election has exceeded 11 million.

Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya says the first results are expected to be released tomorrow earliest at around 2.30 pm after the counting of ballots commenced tomorrow morning.

Speaking to media after polling concluded today Election Chief said counting of votes in several districts will begin tomorrow at 7.00 am. However, the starting time may be delayed since the counting officials and other staff have to be subjected to anti-coronavirus measures before entering the counting centers.

The ballot boxes were sealed and taken to the counting centers today.

“We will check the body temperature of all the officials who will come to count tomorrow. The ballot boxes will not be lonely at the counting centers tonight. Two representatives of each party can be present at the counting center halls with the ballot boxes. In addition uniformed and plainclothes police officers will also be present,” Deshapriya said.

The Election Chief said he expects all the results to be released by 6 pm tomorrow or the latest by Friday morning. All the preference vote results will be issued hopefully by 6 pm Friday or the latest by Saturday (08) morning.

Election Commission Chairman said they expect to gazette the national list of members on Monday 10th August.

Finally, thanking everyone involved in the election, the Election Chief said he will not hold anymore media briefing from the Election Commission Office.
