* Couple on motorcycle seriously injured in collision with election candidate’s Defender vehicle

Aug 05, Colombo: A couple traveling on a motorcycle has collided with a Defender vehicle driven by a group of supporters of a Gampaha District election candidate and were admitted to the Mirigama Hospital with serious injuries, Mirigama Police said.

A government official who were on election duty and her husband were injured in the accident which took place near Bandaranaike Vidyalaya on Weweldeniya Road in Mirigama at around 6.30 pm today (05), police said.

The woman, a resident of the Raindapola area in Mirigama, had met with the accident while riding the motorbike with her husband after completing her election duties.

The Defender while overtaking a car had collided head-on with the motorcycle, the police said.

The motorcyclist who was in a critical condition was rushed to the hospital by a 1990 Suvaseriya ambulance while the residents of the area had taken steps to take the woman to the hospital in another vehicle.

Mirigama Police are conducting investigations under the direction of Mirigama OIC Chief Inspector Priyantha Abeysinghe.
