* Over 82,000 security personnel deployed to ensure peaceful election in Sri Lanka

Aug 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police Department says 82,091 security personnel have been deployed to provide security for the parliamentary election scheduled for tomorrow.

Director of the Police-Elections Senior Superintendent of Police Ashoka Dharmasena, at a special media briefing held today said 61,078 police officers, 3,145 Special Task Force (STF) officers and 2,368 intelligence officers have been deployed around the country to ensure a fair and peaceful election.

In addition, 1,926 Special Bureau officers and 10,750 Civil Defense Force officers have been mobilized, SSP Dharmasena said.

He said total of 25,998 police officers, two officers per center have been deployed to provide security to 12,984 polling centers, while 3,328 officers have been deployed for 64 vote counting centers, 52 officers under the supervision of a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for each center.

Meanwhile, 3,069 mobile patrol units consisting of five officers each have commenced patrolling related to election duties form 6 am today, SSP Dharmasena said. Accordingly, 15, 345 officers have been deployed for mobile patrolling.

Also 64 full riot squads with 10 officers in each squad have been made ready to deploy in case of emergency situations. Another 89 riot squads with 7 officers in each have also been prepared to deploy when needed. Accordingly 1,263 riot squad officers have been deployed.

SSP Dharmasena said there are already 148 road blocks islandwide and another 121 roadblocks have been set up to cover the vote counting centers.

Meanwhile, Police Media Spokesman SP Jaliya Senaratne said no election violence incidents have been reported during the silent period commenced from Sunday midnight but 19 incidents of election law violations have been reported.

He said the police arrested 22 candidates over the incidents and seized seven vehicles.
