Aug 01, Colombo: Minister of Transport Services Management Mahinda Amaraweera said that there are plans to extend the existing railway line from Matara to Beliatta to Hambantota.
Responding to a question raised by journalists at Angunakolapelessa, the Minister said the extension of the railway line from Beliatta to Hambanthota for the passengers and goods is expected to reduce traffic congestion and give the opportunity for the country to save a large amount of money.
The Minister further stated that Cabinet approval has been granted to commence the construction of this railway line on which trains can travel at a speed of 100 km per hour.
Feasibility study and land acquisition for the construction of the railway line will be completed this year. Construction will begin early next year, with the first train scheduled to run in 2023, he added.
The Minister said that the construction of the railway line from Matara to Beliatta was completed without any problems as the Nilwala river bridge had been constructed and no problem would arise during the construction of the tracks up to Hambantota.
However, the aim is to use local engineers and technology as much as possible in the construction of this railway line, the Minister said.
