* Former CID Director Shani Abeysekara remanded until the 7th of August

Aug 01, Colombo: Former Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) SSP Shani Abeysekara who was arrested by the Colombo Crimes Division Friday has been remanded until the 7th of August.

The Colombo Crimes Division arrested the former CID Director at his residence in Matha Road, Colombo 08 and takne to the CCD where he was interrogated for nearly 8 hours for allegedly fabricating evidence over a firearms case.

He was subsequently produced before Gampaha Magistrate yesterday evening.

SSP Shani Abeysekara is accused of concealing evidence in a firearms case investigated by the CID in connection with the abduction and murder of businessman Mohamed Siyam in 2013.

Eight suspects including the former Police DIG Vaas Gunawardena, his wife, and son Ravindu and four other police officers were arrested for the businessman’s murder.

Six suspects including former DIG Vass Gunawardena and his son were sentenced to death for the murder by the trial-at-bar of Colombo High Court in November 2015.
