* Sri Lanka donates Ceylon Tea to UK NHS frontline workers

May 27, Colombo: As a gesture of goodwill to support and appreciate the contribution being made by the National Health Service (NHS) UK, which is at the frontline saving lives during the Covid-19 pandemic, Sri Lanka has donated Ceylon tea and disposable gloves to the staff of the NHS UK to coincide with the International Tea Day.

The Sri Lanka Tea Board and six leading tea producers in Sri Lanka, namely, Vintage Teas Ceylon Ltd, English Tea Shop, Tea Trends Export Ltd, Dilmah Ceylon Tea, Mlesna Ceylon Ltd, Stassen International Pvt Ltd, and manufacturer of disposable gloves Dipped Products Ltd of the Hayleys Group contributed to this generous donation.

Sri Lanka High Commission handed over a consignment of Ceylon tea and gloves to Consultant Respiratory and Head of Respiratory Unit of Medway Hospital in Kent, Dr Gihan Hettiarachchi and his team. Dr Hettiarachchi who was recently featured in the “Good Morning Britain” TV program was applauded by recovered COVID-19 patients for his professionalism and care towards them and their families during their difficult time.

A further donation of Ceylon tea and gloves to Barts Health, the largest NHS Trust in London with 6 partner hospitals including NHS Nightingale London has also been presented.

In a symbolic handover of the items, an assortment of Ceylon tea and a packet of Palm Pro gloves of Hayley was also presented by the High Commission to Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, Minister of State for the Commonwealth, UN and South Asia at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The High Commission also assisted the donation of Akbar Premium tea packs by the Conservative Friends of Sri Lanka in the UK to 18 NHS Hospitals.

These donations are emblematic of Sri Lanka’s commitment to the longstanding bilateral relations with the UK, the High Commission in UK said.
