* Youth drowns while attempting to rescue girl jumped into reservoir

May 21, Colombo: A 32-year-old youth drowned in the Upper Kotmale Reservoir today while trying to save a 22-year-old girl who jumped into the reservoir to commit suicide, the police said.

The 22-year-old girl had jumped into the Upper Kotmale Reservoir from the Talawakelle Railway Bridge around 10:30 this morning in an attempt to commit suicide, the police said.

The youth identified as Hameed Rizwan, a resident of resident of Lindula and a father of two had jumped into the reservoir to rescue the drowning girl.

The passers-by and others have attempted to save both the victims but the youth had disappeared.

The girl was rescued by the OIC of Talawakelle police Inspector Ruwan Fernando with the help of another police officer.

The girls has been admitted to the Lindula Hospital for further treatment.

Police rescuers later discovered the body of the deceased.
