* Three women killed in stampede in Maligawatte

May 21, Colombo: Three women were killed and eight others were injured Thursday in a stampede in a crowded neighborhood in Maligawatte, the police said.

The stampede occurred near a house in Jumma Masjid Street when the residents of the area attempted to receive cash being distributed by a wealthy person to the people.

Police spokesman Jaliya Senaratne said the injured have been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

The police have arrested six people including one who organized the distribution of the money. It has been reported that a businessman from Dehiwela had organized the aid distribution without informing the authorities.

The police have temporarily closed the entry to and from the Jumma Masjid Street.
