* Health Ministry says COVID-19 epidemic is under control in Sri Lanka

May 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Health states that the COVID-19 epidemic in the country has been brought under control.

Dr. Paba Palihawadana, Deputy Director General of Public Health Services, Ministry of Health says the COVID-19 virus has not been reported lately among the public in the society.

Dr. Palihawadana points out that the outbreak of the disease is restricted to the members of the Navy members and the latest confirmed cases were also naval personnel and a relative of a member of the Navy camp.

However, Dr Paba Palihawadana said the public should continue to follow the health guidelines to prevent the spread of coronavirus. She stressed that social distancing and hands washing should be followed diligently.

Dr Palihawadana added that it is important to wear face masks when going out in public and at work.

Meanwhile, the Head of the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva said 23 out of the 25 new cases of COVID-19 infections identified Saturday were navy personnel.

The other two patients have been identified from Miyankulama quarantine center and the Kandakadu quarantine center.

According to the NOCPCO media release by Saturday (16), 488 Navy sailors have confirmed positive to the COVID-19 virus. Of them, 177 have been discharged after recovery and PCR tests while 311 infected sailors are still under treatment in hospitals as of now.

The sailors of the Welisara Navy base became infected with the virus while searching for suspected COVID-19 patients from Suduwella, Ja-Ela, who were evading quarantine.
