Mar 23, Colombo: President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has set up a special fund to facilitate the social welfare of the people along with the efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 coronavirus in the country.

The Fund “COVID-19 Healthcare & Social Security Fund” has been set up to receive financial aid from local and foreign donors, the President’s Office said in a statement.

A separate account has been opened at Bank of Ceylon - AC No 85737373 for contributors to make donations.

The President’s Fund has already donated Rs. 100 million to the fund and it will provide relief to those impacted by COVID-19 in Sri Lanka.

Donations made to the fund through legitimate accounts are exempt from tax and foreign currency regulations. Deposits can be made by check or telegraph transfers.

The COVID-19 Healthcare & Social Security Fund will be administratively managed by a highly skilled board comprising reputed experts in financial and banking sectors, Ministry Secretaries, Auditors and Director General of Health service.

The President requests all to work together in solidarity with humanitarianism in the face of the challenge the nation is facing at present.

It is expected that foreign governments, international financial institutions, Sri Lanka’s private and foreign companies will contribute to the fund.

The President recalled that the people of the country stepped up to support during the 2004 tsunami and 2009 humanitarian operations.
