* A new Commissioner General of Prisons appointed

June 03, Colombo: The Commissioner General of Prisons TMJW Jayasiri Tennakoon has been removed from his post and Prisons Intelligence and Security Division Commissioner Thushara Upuldeniya has been appointed for the post.

Minister of Justice, Human Rights and Legal Reforms Nimal Siripala de Silva in a cabinet paper presented today has approved the appointment of Thushara Upuldeniya as the new Commissioner General of Prisons.

Jayasiri Tennakoon has been transferred to the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs with immediate effect, reports say.

It has been reported that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has severely criticized the role of prisons at a meeting held Monday with prison officials at the Presidential Secretariat to review the current status of prisons.

The President has said that specific information relating to criminal activities and drug peddling operated from prisons have been received and the general public is appalled by this situation. The President has called for an immediate rectification of the situation in prisons.
