Jan 29, Colombo: Attorney General Dappula de Livera has met with the Speaker of Parliament Karu Jayasuriya Tuesday (28) in accordance with the Constitutional Council discussion over the top prosecutor’s decision to arrest interdicted High Court Judge Gihan Pilapitiya.
The Attorney General on 23rd January instructed the police to obtain a warrant for the arrest of suspended Embilipitiya High Court Judge Gihan Pilapitiya over the controversial telephone conversations with UNP MP Ranjan Ramanayake.
However, the Constituent Council, chaired by the Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, decided on 26th January to summon the Attorney General and inquire into some of the decisions taken by him regarding the judiciary.
The Constitutional Council discussed that due to the orders made by the Attorney General, the public's confidence in the judiciary can be undermined. The Council was concerned that such orders would affect the independence of the judicial system and the professional dignity of judges.
The Constitutional Council meeting was attended by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa, MP R Sampanthan, Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, Parliamentarian Thalatha Athukorala and civil society representatives.
