Jan 17, Colombo: The Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court today rejected a request to grant bail to MP Ranjan Ramanayake, who was remanded until 29th, when he was produced in the Magistrate’s Court Friday.
When the case was taken up before the Nugegoda Additional Magistrate HUK Pelpola, the team of lawyers appearing on behalf of MP Ramanayake has called on the Court to release him on bail saying that he has not been arrested in a legal manner.
Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake was arrested during a search of his residence by the Colombo Crimes Division on January 4 for possessing an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition.
During the search conducted on a warrant issued by the court, the police also seized a trove of CDs and tapes containing voice recordings of telephone conversations between the former state minister and members of judiciary and other senior government officials.
MP Ramanayake was released on bail on the next day. However, he was arrested again on the 14th of this month over the controversial telephone conversations he has recorded.
The Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court ordered him to be remanded until the 29th of this month.
Meanwhile, the Court also ordered four media institutions to hand over Ranjan Ramanayake’s audio clips to the Criminal Investigations Department.
