Feb 14, Colombo: Fort Magistrate’s Court Friday ordered to remand the former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia and Ukraine, Udayanga Weeratunga until September 17 when he was produced in court following his arrest this morning.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) arrested the ex-envoy, who was absconding the court, at the Bandaranaike International Airport early this morning when he arrived in Sri Lanka following his extradition from the United Arab Emirates where he was living.

The CID has recorded a lengthy statement from Mr. Udayanga Weeratunga before producing him in court.

Weeratunga was arrested in connection with an investigation by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) into the alleged embezzlement of public funds to the tune of US$ 7.833 million with regard to procurement of six MiG aircraft in 2006 and money laundering.

The Fort Magistrate’s Court in October 2016 issued an Interpol red warrant for his arrest.
