Fri, Feb 14, 2020, 09:47 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 14, Colombo: The former Sri Lankan ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga, who had an Interpol red notice issued against him, returned to the country early this morning.

He arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake on SriLankan Airlines flight UL 208 from Abu Dhabi through Muscat at around 4.30 this morning.

Upon his arrival, Weeratunga was taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers at the airport. He is reportedly being interrogated now.

The former Ambassador to Russia and Ukraine had been evading an arrest warrant issued on 20 October 2016 by a Colombo Magistrate, in relation to investigations pertaining to alleged embezzlement of public funds to the tune of 7.833 million US dollars with regard to procurement of six MiG aircraft in 2006 and money laundering.

Although Weeratunga's diplomatic service had ended on February 28, 2015, he did not return to the country.
