* Payments for public beneficiaries in Colombo to begin tomorrow

Apr 07, Colombo: The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) says the community service to deliver the payments of aid to beneficiaries of public aid given due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Colombo area will begin Wednesday (April 08).

Municipal Commissioner Champika Roshani Dissanayake said considering the current situation in the country, the payments for the month of March will be delivered to the recipients’ homes in the next three days, 8, 9, & 10 April.

Accordingly, 12,970 low income and underprivileged families in the Colombo Municipal Council area will be given assistance. This monthly assistance so far have been paid through the Post Offices.

However, due to the coronavirus risk, Colombo Municipal Council has decided to distribute this money in 47 divisions of the metropolitan area.

The Government Information Department said the distributions of aid will be made on the instructions of the Director General of Health for the safety of the people and it is expected to obtain the assistance of the Police Department for this purpose.
