* Eight officers of Chilaw Police interdicted

Sept 17, Colombo: Eight Police officers serving in the divisional anti-vice unit attached to Chilaw Police Headquarters have been interdicted, the Police Media Division said.

The police officers interdicted include a sub inspector who served as the OIC, a police sergeant, five police constables and a police constable driver.

The team of suspended police officers had arrested a group of suspects engaged in illegal gambling at a hotel in Wennappuwa on September 06, based on information received.

However, Police Headquarters states that only 9 of the 20 suspects engaged in the illegal activity have been arrested and the remaining suspects have been released.

In addition, information has been revealed that a corruption had taken place as the money from the gambling den and the money in the possession of the suspects had been illegally obtained by the policemen, the Police Headquarters said in a statement.

Acting on this information, Naththandiya Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) has carried out an inquiry and the officers in question have been interdicted.
