Thu, Sep 12, 2019, 08:17 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 12, Colombo: The twelve Navy personnel including two Lieutenant Commanders, who were recently arrested and remanded by the Trincomalee Magistrate in connection with shooting at a fishing vessel, have been granted bail.

The navy personnel arrested for firing on the fishermen last month, were produced in court on September 10 on a court order and have been remanded till September 16.

However, they were ordered released on bail today following a motion filed by the Sri Lanka Navy.

The two officers and ten sailors were arrested after they opened fire on a suspicious vessel when the crew of the boat disregarded orders to halt the vessel for inspection and attempted to flee in the seas off Pulmoddai on August 28.

The Navy had fired several warning shots to stop the vessel. In a subsequent search operation, four Muslims were arrested and handed over to Kuchchaveli Police.

The naval personnel were charged with assault on four fishermen and causing gunshot injuries on one of them.
