Oct 24, Colombo: Sri Lanka gained a notch from last year and ranked as 99th out of 190 countries in World Bank's Doing Business 2020 index, according to the latest report.

Although showing slight improvement in few subsectors, Sri Lanka's overall score remained unchanged from last year at 61.8 with no new business reforms implemented this year.

The rankings are based on the average of each economy's ease of doing business scores for the 10 topics included in this year's aggregate ranking. The measure shows how close each economy is to global best practices in business regulation. A higher score indicates a more efficient business environment and stronger legal institutions.

In South Asia region India and Pakistan made the most business regulatory reforms earning spots among the world’s top ten most improved economies while Nepal and Bangladesh also made notable improvements.

However, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Maldives did not make any regulatory changes in the past year.

India, in 63rd place in the Doing Business rankings, is the highest ranked economy in South Asia, followed by Bhutan (89) and Nepal (94). The region's lowest ranked economies are Bangladesh (168) and Afghanistan (173). Pakistan ranked 108th and Maldives 147th.
