* Government to abolish carbon tax on motor vehicles

Oct 17, Colombo: The government has decided to abolish the carbon tax on motor vehicles.

The legislation to amend the carbon tax will be presented to parliament on next Wednesday (23), Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera said at a press conference held at the Finance Ministry today.

Mr. Samaraweera said the measure will be taken in keeping with a promise given by Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa.

The government in line with budget proposals, introduced the carbon tax from January 2019 on directly fossil-fueled cars, considering fuel consumption in cars.

The Carbon tax is charged under three categories - the manufacturing year of the vehicles of less than five years, between five and ten years and more than ten years,
