Oct 10, Colombo: The Constitutional Council has today informed the Elections Commission to nominate a permanent Chairman as the Presidential Election cannot be held under an Acting Chairman according to legal provisions.
This Constitutional Council made this request to the Elections Commission following a meeting held at the Parliamentary Complex Wednesday morning under the patronage of the Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.
The Speaker, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and other members of the Constitutional Council attended yesterday's meeting. However, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, Tamil National Alliance Leader R. Sampanthan and President's representative Parliamentarian Mahinda Samarasinghe did not attend the meeting. In addition Acting Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya and Attorney General Dappula de Livera were specially summoned to the meeting.
Attorney General Dappula de Livera has presented submissions that an Independent Elections Commission cannot hold a Presidential election under an Acting Chairman. Accordingly the Constitutional Council has taken initiatives to inform the Elections Commission to appoint a Permanent Chairman.
