* SLFP has never opposed the Rajapaksas - Gotabhaya

Oct 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Presidential candidate, former defense secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa today held inaugural rally of his election campaign at the Salgado playground in Anuradhapura this evening.

The inaugural rally under the theme "Successful Vision - Functioning Country" to ensure the victory of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was held under the patronage of the Leader of the Opposition of the Sri Lanka People's Podujana Peramuna Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) representatives including former general Secretary MP Duminda Dissanayake, MP Weera Kumara Dissanayake also participated in the rally in support of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

Speaking at the event, Gotabhaya said Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which announced its support to the candidate today, never opposed the Rajapaksas.

"It is with great pleasure that I announce that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party is joining hands with me in this victorious journey," he said.

The defense secretary in the former Rajapaksa government said under his brother's rule a safer country was created where people could travel without fear of bombs He pledged to create such a safe country again if he is elected.

"If you fulfill your responsibility on (Nov.) 16th, I promise to ensure a safer country," he said.

Former Secretary General of SLFP, MP. Duminda Dissanayake, and other representatives of the SLFP just joined the inaugural rally with me.

Arrangements have been made to hold similar campaign rallies throughout the country ahead of the Nov 16 election.

A large gathering including political party leaders and representatives of various organizations supporting Gotabhaya Rajapaksa participated in the rally.
