Nov 19, Colombo: The Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and other party leaders, along with many other Members of Parliament, discussed with the Speaker of parliament Karu Jayasuriya the manner in which the proceedings of Parliament should take place after the new President elected on the 16th of this month was sworn in.
The opinion of many was that people have given a clear mandate on governance of the country and action should be taken accordingly.
Accordingly, the following alternative measures have been taken into consideration.
1. Dissolve Parliament on March 01, 2020 in accordance with the Constitution and hold a parliamentary election in April 2020.
2. The Members of Parliament, voluntarily dissolve the Parliament by a 3/2 majority, and immediately go for general election.
3. The Prime Minister and the government resign and allow the new president to appoint a care-taker Cabinet until a general election.
Within this week a party leaders' meeting will be called and a final decision will be taken on the above options.
As soon as the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition discuss with their respective party leaders and inform the Speaker, the Speaker will summon a meeting of all party leaders to take a final decision, Speaker's Media office said.
