Nov 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka's newly elected President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has accepted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invitation to visit India as the two countries look forward to further strengthen the bilateral relations under the new administration.
Prime Minister Modi congratulating Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa over telephone on his electoral victory in the Presidential elections held Saturday (November 16), has extended an invitation to the new President to visit India at his early convenience.
"Conveying the good wishes on behalf of the people of India and on his own behalf, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that under the able leadership of Mr. Rajapaksa the people of Sri Lanka will progress further on the path of peace and prosperity and fraternal, cultural, historical and civilizational ties between India and Sri Lanka will be further strengthened," Prime Minister Modi's Office said in a statement.
The Prime Minister has reiterated India's commitment to continue to work with the Government of Sri Lanka to these ends.
Mr. Rajapaksa thanking the Prime Minister for his good wishes has accepted the invitation for a visit. He also expressed his readiness to work with India very closely to ensure development and security.
