* Minister Kabir Hashim resigns from ministerial portfolio, UNP chairmanship

Nov 18, Colombo: Minister of Highways & Road Development and Petroleum Resources Development and Chairman of the United National Party (UNP) Kabir Hashim has decided to resign from his ministerial portfolio as well as from the party post as the Chairman with immediate effect.

Congratulating the newly elected President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Kabir Hashim urged the new President to "ensure a peaceful post-election environment for all citizens of our country."

Hashim said he will continue to stand by his leader, the defeated candidate of the New Democratic Front (NDF) led by the UNP, Sajith Premadasa.

"I will continue to stand by my leader who has proved himself beyond all obstacles and has been an example to us all politicians," he said.
