Thu, Nov 14, 2019, 03:44 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Nov 14, Colombo: Ven. Dr. Inguruwatte Sumangala Thera has ended the hunger strike this morning after New Democratic Front presidential candidate Minister Sajith Premadasa requested the Thera to end the fast.

Ven. Sumangala Thera commenced an indefinite fast on the 10th November at the Independence Square in Colombo demanding the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to prove that he has cancelled his United States citizenship.

After the final election rally yesterday in Maradana, Minister Sajith Premadasa and several other ministers have visited the fasting Thera at the Independence Square. The Presidential candidate Premadasa has appealed to the Thera to end the hunger strike.

After a doctor from the Colombo National Hospital has visited the Thero and examined him, the Thera was taken to the hospital in a Suva Seriya ambulance.

Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday said that fasting will not be allowed for any reason during the election silent period which commenced from midnight Wednesday (13).
