Nov 09, Colombo: Members of the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) have arrived in Sri Lanka to monitor the 2019 Presidential election to be held on the 16th of November.

Before deployment to various parts of the island, the long term observers (LTOs) of ANFREL's International Election Observation Mission (IEOM) for the 2019 Sri Presidential Election participated in a one-day pre-deployment briefing on 31 October 2019 in Colombo.

The observation team comprising 41 people from 16 countries plans to monitor the Presidential election covering all districts of the country.

The mission will be headed by Mr. Damaso Magbual of the Philippines, among the most veteran international election observers in the world.

ANFREL said the team of 4 core members including 2 electoral analysts, 9 long-term observers, and 28 short-term observers will be covering all electoral districts to engage with election stakeholders, with the aim of promoting democratic norms and good electoral practices.

European Union and Commonwealth observers have also been deployed in the island.

Rohana Hettiarachchi, the Executive Director of local election monitor, PAFFREL said that there is a decrease in the number of incidents of violence during this presidential election compared to the presidential election in 2015.
