Nov 07, Colombo: Two Ministerial Security Division Police Constables attached to MP S. B. Dissanayake's security detail have been arrested in connection with yesterday's shooting incident in Polpitiya, Ginigathhena, Police said.

The two security personnel had opened fire at two individuals for obstructing the vehicle that MP Dissanayake was travelling in last night.

The MP was traveling Ginigathhena Polpitiya road last night after participating in an election rally in Koththellena area of the Ginigathhena Police Division when a van carrying four youths collided with the front mirror of the security vehicle.

A heated argument has broken out between the MP's security officers and the youths and shooting has taken place. One of the injured youth, Ravindra Rashan, 22, from Minuwandeniya, who is receiving treatment at the Ginigathena Regional Hospital, has said that he and his friend sustained gunshot wounds.

He said that he had been shot in the right arm and that his friend had been shot in the left leg. They were admitted to Kithulgala Thaligamaa regional hospital and later transferred to the Ginigathhena Regional Hospital and the Karawanella Base Hospital.

Thalathuoya police have arrested the MP's security officers on a complaint lodged at the police.

Police discovered three empty ammunition shells at the scene of the shooting. The security officers' two firearms were also taken into police custody.

The two security guards, the van and the two pistols allegedly used for the shooting are to be produced at the Hatton Magistrate's Court today (07) and the two suspects will be produced for an identification parade, Ginigathhena Police said.
