* Three 'Ava Gang' members arrested for Manipai clash with police

July 23, Colombo: Police have arrested three persons suspected to be members of the 'Aava Gang' last evening over a clash with the police at Manipai in Jaffna, police said.

A clash broke out between the police and a group of Ava members who came with sharp weapons to attack several houses in Inuvil area last Saturday (20).

A suspect who has allegedly attempted to assault a police officer with a sharp instrument was killed when police opened fire during the clash. The other suspects have fled, and search operations were carried out.

Three of the suspects were arrested by the Kopai police last evening. The suspects aged 18 and 20 are residents of Jaffna and Manipai areas.

The arrested suspects are to be produced before the Mallakam Magistrate Court today.
