* Ava member killed in clash with police

July 21, Colombo: A man has been killed in a clash between police and suspected 'Ava' gang members in Manipai Inuvil area, in Jaffna last night, police said.

The suspected Ava member was killed when police opened fire at an Ava group when they tried to attack a group of police officers during an inspection.

Officers of the Manipay police have inspected the area after receiving information that a group of Ava members had come to attack several houses in the area last night.

Police Media Spokesman's Office stated that six suspects who came in three motorbikes with sharp weapons had assaulted the police when the police tried to arrest them at around 8.40 last night..

When the police opened fire one suspect was injured and the other five had fled. The 22-year old injured suspect succumbed to his injuries after admitted to the Jaffna Hospital. The deceased suspect was identified as Selwaratnam Kavigajan, a resident of Kodikaman

Three swords and a motorcycle left behind by the suspects have been taken into police custody.
