Sun, Jul 21, 2019, 12:47 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 21, Colombo: A new broad political alliance, headed by United National Party (UNP) leader and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, will be formally announced to the public on August 5 in preparation for the upcoming presidential election.

UNP General Secretary Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam states that the United National Party (UNP) will contest the next presidential election in a major alliance based on national security, democracy and the economy. The UNP General Secretary stated that an agreement will be signed with the partner parties on the 5th of August.

Meanwhile, Minister Rajitha Senaratne speaking to the media yesterday after a program held in Kalutara, said the new alliance has been named as the Democratic National Front.

“The main work of our alliance is finished. The constitution of the alliance and the symbol have been finalized. The manifesto is being prepared now. It will be presented to party leaders and presented to the public at the auspicious time of 10 am on August 5 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium," he said.

"We come as the Democratic National Front. We even present the flag in different colors. We build the alliance with a leadership council."

"We bring this program in a new form in the history of Sri Lanka. We will present a massive program to build the future of the country's people. We hope to win all future elections through this. We will present a presidential candidate. He will be the next President. We will join hands with the people to win any election based on that.”

According to Minister Senaratne, the new alliance plans to invite like-minded civil society organizations also to join. However, no decision would be taken on a presidential candidate at the August 5 meeting.
