* Government will grant land rights to all citizens - PM
Sat, Jul 13, 2019, 09:54 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 13, Colombo: Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says that the right to own land that was limited to the rich will be granted to all the citizens regardless of their social status.

Speaking at an event in Nawalapitiya today (13), the Prime Minister said it is the policy of the United National Party to grant the rights of the land to the little man of the country. Accordingly, the national program to provide one million land deeds to the landless public has been initiated, he said.

The Prime Minister presided over the distribution of land deeds to the people of Nawalapitiya under the national program at the Nawalapitiya Central College grounds today.

The Premier speaking further said the UNP has created an environment where ordinary people can enjoy their land under the grant of land deeds and in the future, measures will be taken to grant freehold ownership to the people who have lived in state lands for 10 years.

"After we assumed office in 2015 we started the program of granting land deeds. Today we are implementing this program successfully. The next step is to give freehold ownership of land to you, the ordinary people of this country. We will transfer this land to you when you occupied the state land for 10 consecutive years. Through it you will be able to take pride in owning a land."

The Premier further said the present government has eliminated the doubts the low income people had about their future by giving them their own freehold land.

The Prime Minister added that the government under the Enterprise Sri Lanka program has taken steps to provide funds to start various businesses in the country.

"The current system of trade economy that was started by J.R. Jayawardene is being carried forward successfully under the UNP government, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said.
