* Navy arrests 6 Indian fishermen for engaging in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters

July 12, Colombo: Sri Lanka Navy has arrested a group Indian fishermen including a child from Tamil Nadu along with a dhow for allegedly breaching the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and illegally fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

Naval personnel onboard a Fast Gun Boat attached to the Northern Naval Command, during a routine patrol arrested the six Indian fishermen along with their fishing craft Thursday (July 11). The fishermen had trespassed about 3 nautical miles into the Sri Lankan territorial waters for illegal fishing.

Among the group there were 05 persons aged 62, 48, 39, 27, 22 and a 12 years old child. After a basic medical check-up they were handed over to the Fisheries Inspectorate in Jaffna for onward legal action.
